Overview
MoonPay brought me in to diagnose why users were abandoning checkout before completing crypto purchases. The existing flow had 7 steps — I got it to 4.
Research
- Reviewed Hotjar session recordings (200+ sessions)
- Ran 8 user interviews
- Maze usability testing on existing flow
Key Issues Found
- Step 3 asked for KYC documents before showing the fee breakdown — users felt blindsided
- Error messages were technical and unhelpful
- Mobile keyboard covered the CTA button on smaller screens
What I Redesigned
- Moved fee transparency to step 1
- Simplified KYC into a single upload screen
- Rewrote all error states in plain language
- Fixed mobile keyboard overlap on all breakpoints
Results
- 34% reduction in checkout drop-off
- Average completion time dropped from 4.2 min to 2.8 min
